As in other villages of the Altiplano, Orce has many cave houses dug into the slopes around the village centre. On the eastern edge of the village, next to the road to María, the homes sink completely into the ground and only their whitewashed fronts and chimneys show.
The earth keeps a steady temperature all year round, a great advantage in a climate of very cold winters and hot summers. Many caves are still lived in and others have become rural guesthouses. They are private homes: please respect the residents' privacy as you walk around.
